I suppose so... more or less. Though I guess I've never been quite sure whether they really can take people from after they're dead, or if they just take them from the instant beforehand.
Oh, no. Well... sort of. Erm, that is, I think I was wounded fatally... and then appeared here. So I'm not sure if I died and then immediately came here, or if I was brought here right before I was going to die.
But, um... Putting that aside for the moment, I'm also from the afterlife. So technically, you could say that I've... always been dead?
It usually isn't!... I mean, it's impossible for a normal dead human to... give birth, whether it's in the afterlife or not. But depending on how much spiritual power someone has, it can be possible... and parents with high spiritual power will have children with high spiritual power, most of the time. So there are actually quite a few, um... family lines? Of people who have always only been there, and never in the living world. But almost everyone in Soul Society really is a normal dead person. I guess it's strange. It seems normal when you live there.
[Reborn can't help laughing at Hanatarou's earnest explanation, and his eventual conclusion, though the tone is such that it's not meant to be mocking in any way, just companionable amusement.]
I think that's the case with just about every place. [He waves one hand in an expressive gesture to indicate their current situation.] I know I definitely would not have believed I could have a conversation such as the one we just had back home.
Indeed, that would be too many things to relate in a short amount of time anyway. [He nods his head towards the door, his lips quirking up in a smile.]

Why?

I actually didn't.
That's what I meant by it not turning out well.

OMG are they actually going to have this conversation...He doesn't look surprised, exactly, but just curious.]Are you referring to the bad habit our hosts have of grabbing people willy-nilly from various points in their personal timelines?

He amends, a little apologetically:] An 'after'life usually implies that something came before, no?

I was actually born there, though. So I wasn't really "dead," but I've never been a regular living human, either.

Ah, actually, we're here already, so maybe you can tell me next time.

Next time then.
