REGAIN REGISTRY
Hanatarou Yamada
memories

He once traveled with a group of superpowered men and women... somewhere... for some reason.

He once committed high treason. And he didn't feel bad about it.

He used to get bullied by a bunch of grown men who were all super into weapons and thought he was pathetic.

He met Rukia Kuchiki. (He had been nervous because of her high status, but she was unexpectedly gracious and friendly.)

There was a person named Genryuusai Shigekuni Yamamoto; he had distinctive white facial hair, was immensely powerful, and commanded a large-scale military organization.

He habitually dressed in an outfit that consisted of black kimono and hakama, waraji, and a sword.

He knew quite a few people who capably wielded swords of unusual size and shape.

He was a part of the force commanded by Yamamoto (possibly a.k.a. Santa); he was in a non-combat role, and many of his duties were menial tasks.

He was a bit of a pill popper, and he explained (to someone) that everyone in his division carried these stamina-restoring supplements so they could keep working hard through their exhaustion.

He had a katana named Hisagomaru.

His name was Hanatarou Yamada (and he was nicknamed "Hana").

He resided in "Soul Society," a place where everyone is a soul without a separate body.

He developed strong feelings for Rukia Kuchiki, with whom he had many long conversations. There was another person she'd talk about sometimes, and her face would always be sad when she did. (Also, these conversations took place in a prison cell.)

The swords he and others in his memories used were
zanpakutou (soul-cutting swords). Each was unique to its wielder and had its own living spirit who, under certain circumstances, could manifest separately from the blade.

He was taken hostage by two invaders (whose appearances he remembers, but not their names: one had orange hair and a sword as tall as he was, and the other was muscular and wore a green bandana) in the middle of a battle that he stumbled into by accident.

While running desperately (to somewhere, or from something?), he fell; the man in the green bandana came back for him, picked him up while complaining about how troublesome he was, and kept going.

More about zanpakutou: the blade is capable of purifying corrupted spirits ("Hollows"), while "stamping" normal spirits with the hilt sends them peacefully on to the afterlife.

In a strange, dark place covered in ice, he received a deadly wound from Rukia Kuchiki--a slash from his right hip to his left shoulder.

The man in the green bandana had a bunch of fireworks that he used as weapons (and he did, in fact, take them underground).

He regularly spent time in a network of underground waterways, and he knew his way around quite well.

He was a shinigami, and he "lived" in the afterlife.

The basic structure of the Gotei 13: There were thirteen semi-specialized divisions, each with a captain, vice captain, and other seated officers down the line; everyone was under the ultimate leadership of the captain-commander (who was also the first division captain).

He attended an engagement party for Rukia Kuchiki and a man named Renji Abarai.

He was kneeling over a man with long red hair who lay unconscious in the street and whose torso and arms were completely wrapped in bandages.

The bandaged red-haired man lying in the street--whose name, it happens, was Renji Abarai--had tattoos all over his body.

Even for residents of Soul Society, it was possible to grow older (although the process was much slower), feel hunger (although the vast majority never did), and be hurt or killed.

He had decades' worth of medical knowledge.

He stole the key to a tower reserved for prisoners slated for execution.

The creatures called Hollows were once souls of the departed who lost their hearts to despair, attachments, or malice. To ease their suffering, they instinctively devour other souls.

The central part of Soul Society ("Seireitei") was separated from the outer regions ("Rukongai") by high walls--and a gigantic invisible dome.

The tower for capital prisoners was known as the Shrine of Penitence. From its single window, it overlooked the execution grounds.

The oldest member of the Gotei 13 was its Captain-Commander, who was well over a thousand years old. Hanatarou himself, at around a hundred, was on the younger side for the organization.

His full title: Gotei 13, 4th division, 7th seat; advanced relief team 14 leader.

Located in Seireitei, the Central Soul Arts Institute is a school where students train and study to become shinigami.

Each of the thirteen divisions in the Gotei 13 had a unique flower emblem and motto based on the language of flowers. Fourth division's flower was the gentian, with the meaning "love for the sorrowful."

The day they met, he stayed awake all night healing the wounds of the two invaders.

One of the Gotei 13's captains, Sajin Komamura, was literally a giant dog who walked around on two legs and could talk. (He managed to conceal this fact for many, many years by wearing a giant bucketlike helmet over his entire head.)

The day after Hanatarou was taken hostage by invaders, 5th division captain Sousuke Aizen was found murdered.

Aizen's murder was part of a far-reaching conspiracy that eventually resulted in the murder of all forty-six members of Seireitei's highest governing body.

While imprisoned, he heard some of his fellow prisoners being broken out of their cell in a very loud and chaotic fashion (he couldn't see what happened, but it sounded like an entire wall was obliterated). He himself wasn't freed.

He had a brother, Seinosuke, who was older by several decades.

When he introduced himself to the guys who took him hostage, they both told him his name was hard to remember; he protested that everyone's always said it was nice and easy to remember.

He watched a fight between Renji and the orange-haired invader! Ultimately, Renji lost, but both men sustained grievous injuries.

He used a drop of shinten to incapacitate one of the two guards posted at the Shrine of Penitence. (The other guard was punched out by the bandana guy.)

While all division members carried special stamina-restoring supplements, his were special: each one featured a mark shaped like a skull with heart eyes! They were given to him by a senior division member.

He struggled a lot with feeling useless, weak, and cowardly, especially in comparison with those he saw putting their lives on the line for the sake of their convictions.

When the invaders took him hostage (a previously regained memory), they threatened to kill him unless the soldiers surrounding them let them through... and the soldiers, quite sincerely (gleefully, even!), told them to go ahead and kill him.

He didn't visit either location himself, but at some point, a town in the living world was transported to Soul Society for protection and temporarily replaced with a perfect replica.

Shortly after he heard some of his fellow prisoners being busted out of their cell and escaping, a young man from 6th division—Rikichi Yuki—showed up and broke Hanatarou out, too.
